Implementing the Healthy Youth Act: A Workshop for School Personnel

About the Workshop
OSPI is collaborating with the Center for Health Training, with funding from the Centers for Disease Control, to offer a modular, two-day training event for classroom teachers, school administrators and curriculum directors to discuss implementation of the Healthy Youth Act. The workshop will focus on the following content:

Day One: Administrative Issues, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm:

  • State and local data about teen sexuality and health
  • The Healthy Youth Act: what it is and what it is not, including school requirements for implementation
  • The DOH/OSPI Guidelines for Sexual Health Information and Disease Prevention, and its correlation with the Act
  • OSPI curricula review and criteria
  • Responding to community concerns

Day Two: Resources and Skills for Implementation, 8:30 am – 3:30 pm:

  • The research on what works to prevent teen pregnancy and STD/HIV
  • Comprehensive sexuality education best practices
  • Local application of the OSPI curricula review criteria
  • Examination of sample curricula that comply with the Healthy Youth Act

Audience: Classroom teachers, School administrators and Curriculum directors; Districts are encouraged to send a health education leadership team.

Following this training participants will be able to:

  • Describe the Healthy Youth Act
  • Discriminate between curricula that comply and those that don’t
  • Identify and utilize resources for support and implementation
  • Recognize and implement comprehensive sexuality education best practices
  • Effectively address and respond to community concerns

Fees: Registration is $40.00 for two days and $25 for either single day. Fees include continental breakfast, lunch, and materials.

Registration Deadline: Space is limited; the registration deadline is one week prior to the event.
