Risk Reduction: Assessing Risk and Clients' Readiness for Change

About the Workshop
This workshop will focus on the "Stages of Change" theory that identifies the stages through which people move as they work to change a behavior. Emphasis on the challenges and characteristics of each stage will provide health care providers with the necessary skills to assess their clients' readiness for change. Participants will also gain valuable techniques for appropriate risk reduction interventions. This workshop will also include components that emphasize the importance of communication with partners about risk reduction.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this workshop participants will be able to:

  • Define the "Stages of Change" theory as a basis for examining the process of changing and maintaining behavior.
  • Discuss the continuum of risk and define strategies of risk reduction at each point.
  • Identify indicators of abuse and describe specific strategies to help patients prevent coercion.
  • Describe strategies for talking with a partner about reducing risk.
  • Practice appropriate stage-based messages to clients.

Audience: This workshop is designed for nurse practitioners and other clinicians, RNs, patient educators and reproductive health professionals who work in a clinical setting.

Trainer: Teri Tomatich, MEd, is an experienced and engaging facilitator of adult learning groups. Her Masters of Education degree from Western Washington University is in Adult Learning Theory. Since 1988 she has served as a trainer and consultant for a range of organizations, including 14 years of service with Planned Parenthood of Western Washington as a community educator and trainer. As adjunct faculty, she has taught courses on human sexuality and adolescent sexual development at colleges such as Emory University, Kennesaw State University, Oglethorpe University, and Highline Community College. She authored the teacher's manual for the college textbook Sexuality Now: Embracing Diversity by Thomson Wadsworth Publishing and has facilitated learning via the internet through an on line web site (www.sexetc.org) with Rutgers University. She models the art of teaching by helping to create a safe learning environment for trainers to enhance their skills and problem solve. Her objective is to assist trainers in creating successful learning exchanges and inspire them in their task of reaching diverse learners.

Fees: Title X funded agencies: $25. Private/Other funding: $55. Refunds are not available for cancellations within 48 hours of the event, but substitutions will be honored or credit given for a future event.
