Presenter: Linda Dominguez, RNC, BSN, WHNP

About the Conference:
Ms. Dominguez will review the 2004 Healthcare Disparities Report, looking at four race/ethnicity groups and then talk about contraceptive choices for these groups. She will present some of the factors and belief systems that operate when contraceptive choices are made. She will also discuss teens as a culture of their own. Using a case study approach, Ms Dominguez will help the participants understand how to find "a good fit" for clients that respects their cultural and beliefs. She will provide "Questions for Success" and then close with an opportunity for participants to look at their community resources. There will be time for Q&A.

Participants of this session will be able to:

  • Discuss health disparities among various cultures living in the United States
  • Describe techniques and strategies for successful contraceptive use
  • Utilize the case study approach to explore a good contraceptive fit for women from various cultural backgrounds
  • Explore how to move toward cultural competence
