Highlights from Region VI
Statewide events include clinical conferences, a project directors' conference held annually in Texas, and clinic managers' institutes. Several states take advantage of state-of-the art videoconference capabilities, and hundreds of family planning providers participate in interactive videoconferences.
Frequently requested topics include: Male involvement/Increasing services to males; Birth control and STD updates; Customer service; Clinical issues; Cultural competence.
To maximize family planning providers' capacity to provide in-house training, CHT Austin has created several products, including online training:
- Client Satisfaction Made Easy manual includes ways to involve all staff, and offers short, ready-to-use surveys in both English and Spanish.
- Helping Parents Engage manual is designed for clinic staff and community health educators to encourage family involvement in adolescents' sexual health and decision-making.
- Keys to the Staff Development Treasure Chest manual helps agency staff who are responsible for hiring, new staff orientation, and training, and includes activities to help staff perform their jobs better, identify staff development needs, plan for ways to meet that need, and carry out that plan.
- Orientation to Family Planning online training addresses the basic knowledge needed by family planning providers, including reproductive anatomy and physiology, STDs, and contraceptive methods. This course also raises awareness of personal vs. professional values, and introduces basic concepts of communication skills and effective health education.
CHT Austin staff can also provide specialized training and technical assistance on request, including:
- Family Planning Basics course, developed by our Oakland office
- BIG DECISIONS™ workshop to effectively facilitate this abstinence-plus sexuality curriculum for 7th to 12th grade students
- Patient Flow Analysis, using the CDC's WinPFA software, to help clinics collect and analyze data on clinic flow and improve clinic efficiency.
