About This Workshop
This interactive, skill-based workshop will provide participants with an overview of client-centered pregnancy options counseling with a focus on using motivational interviewing skills and techniques. Participants will explore all pregnancy options available to clients/patients and will discuss the qualities and skills required when providing client-centered services. Case studies will be utilized in discussion and application activities.
Target Audience
This workshop is designed for family planning staff working as clinic assistants, patient educators, RNs, health educators, or others who work with patients requesting pregnancy testing or pregnancy options education.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this workshop participants will be able to:
- Describe five key principles in client-centered pregnancy options education.
- Identify all pregnancy options available to clients.
- Discuss four essential skills used in motivational interviewing techniques.
- Demonstrate motivational interviewing techniques using case studies.

Trainer/Facilitator
Karen Dluhosh, MC is a Project Director for the Center for Health Training and has worked in family planning and reproductive health as a counselor, community educator, manager and professional trainer, for over twenty-five years. She received her masters in counseling (MC) degree from Seattle University (SU) and served as adjunct faculty at SU co-teaching a fundamental counseling skills course for graduate students for five years. She has more than fifteen years experience counseling and educating individuals, couples and groups on a wide range of family planning and reproductive health topics. She has been providing training for community professionals on these topics for over fifteen years in addition to teaching effective communication and counseling skills and motivational interviewing strategies. Karen joined the Center for Health Training, Seattle, Washington, in 2001. She currently manages the Title X Training and Technical Assistance grant for Region X.
